Rodents and other pests can cause a considerable amount of damage to a home. Many of the fires that are of unknown origin, for example, may have been caused by rodents. Approximately 25% of these fires are believed to be caused by rodents that gnawed on or through gas lines, electrical wiring, and matches.
Rats and Mice
A rat’s territory tends to consist of a 50 to 150-foot radius from its nest. They are able to enter a home or other structure through a 1/2-inch hole.
Mice, on the other hand, tend to live within a 10 to 30-foot radius of their nests. They are able to enter a home or other structure through an even smaller opening than a rat. In general, a 1/4-inch opening is large enough for them to pass through.
