Your Homes Well and Water Sanitizing

If your home is not connected to a public water system then you most likely get your water from a well. It’s nice to be able to supply your own water for your home, but you have to be cautious in keeping it clean and sanitary. Here’s what you need to know about your well and water sanitizing.

If a well is not properly cleaned, it may have coliform bacteria. These bacteria come from surface water and contaminate the well, ultimately making people sick that are living in the home.

One of the best ways to help disinfect the well is to add a small amount of chlorine to it. This will “shock” the well and help kill off bacteria such as coliform and E. coli. Creating a mixture of 5% bleach and water would also disinfect the well.

After applying the mixture, it’s good practice to run your garden hose to help mix the chlorine in your well. This will help disinfect not only your well’s interior but also your pipes.
